Esk Among 33 State Champions at Chickasha Campus

Recent CV Tech and Tuttle High School graduate Johnathan Esk put his precision machining skills to the test at the virtual state SkillsUSA Contest and won a gold medal. He is one of nearly three dozen students to win state championship hardware at student organization contests this spring.

Hundreds of students enroll in programs each year at Canadian Valley Technology Center with an end goal to learn valuable skills that will lead to employment.

Once on campus, many discover unrealized leadership potential and a competitive drive within the school’s Career Tech Student Organizations. Skill application is put to the test in local, state and national competitions.

Jonathan Esk enrolled in CV Tech’s Precision Machining Technology program last year. He quickly discovered he was a natural fit, said Wes Hess, instructor. Esk spent his junior year of high school learning mostly manual machine operation.

This year, he advanced to programming and operating more complex computer numerical control (CNC) machines and flourished, Hess said. Esk, 18, and a recent Tuttle High School graduate, won the state SkillsUSA CNC Technician gold medal. Hess said he immediately set a higher goal.

“He told me last year he is going to win nationals,” Hess said.

SkillsUSA Nationals is June 8-9. Esk must complete a virtual skills demonstration of his abilities. The competition mirrors the workplace. Machinists start with a blue print and use machine tools, such as manual or CNC lathes, milling machines and grinders to produce precise parts for several industries.

Esk is one of 33 CV Tech Chickasha Campus high school and adult students to win a state gold medal. Many of them will compete at virtual national competitions next month.
