Spring Plant Sale Returns to CV Tech’s El Reno Campus

Service Careers students host the annual bedding plant sale April 13-14 at Canadian Valley Technology Center’s El Reno Campus. Each year before the public sale, CV Tech students welcome area first graders for a ladybug release inside the greenhouse. This year, 12,000 ladybugs were dispatched. Ladybugs are beneficial to plants, because they prevent crop-damaging aphids and other destructive insect pests from feeding on plants.

EL RENO – A new greenhouse full of annual bedding plants awaits visitors to Canadian Valley Technology Center as the school hosts the annual spring plant sale April 13-14.

The greenhouse was relocated to the northeast side of the campus during recent reconstruction. The campus was destroyed by a May 2013 tornado.

Horticulture is a key component of the curriculum in the school’s Service Careers program.

Students do all the work themselves, starting with seeds in the winter. All plants are grown inside the greenhouse and are cared for by students.

All proceeds will go immediately back into purchasing materials for next year’s sale, said Service Careers instructor Jayson Floyd.

The sale is held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day and will stay open during lunch.

Annuals for sun and shade will be sold, including eight tomato and pepper varieties. A selection of ornamental grasses and sweet potato vine will be sold, as well as marigolds, geraniums and other flowers.

Visitors should enter the school at the eastern-most entrance from State Highway 66. Ample parking is available adjacent to the greenhouse. The road is also used by school buses.
