OKLAHOMA CITY – Five Canadian Valley Technology Center students were among top female leaders across the state on Tuesday (Oct. 31) during the Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women “Celebrating Women Luncheon” in the Phillips Pavilion on the Governor’s Mansion grounds.
Students were selected based on excellence at CV Tech. All are members of the National Technical Honor Society, which includes criteria based on fewer than three absences in the Fall 2016 semester, maintaining an A average in their chosen Career Tech program and submission of a letter of recommendation from their instructor.
The ladies worked the registration table and coat check for the event, which highlighted in part the commission's work on behalf of women through its Community Conversations initiative that spotlights issues facing women in communities statewide.
The commission is dedicated to helping women through empowerment and education. The first Champion for Women Award was presented by the commission on Tuesday to Nancy Miller, a TV series producer of "Against the Wall," "Saving Grace," "Leaving L.A.," "The Closer" and "Any Day Now."
Miller set "Saving Grace" in her hometown of Oklahoma City. The series (2007-10) featured fictional Oklahoma City Police Detective Grace Hanadarko, played by Holly Hunter.
The CV Tech students attending were Ashlin Tryczak (Pre-Engineering), Zoe Blue (Early Care and Education) and Cheyenne Henry (Graphic Design), all of Chickasha High School, Mikyela Climer, a Tuttle adult (Digital Media Technology) and Kyla Patterson, who is home schooled in Chickasha (Business Office Technology).
The students represented their career and technical student organizations SkillsUSA, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and Business Professionals of America by serving at the event.
