EL RENO – Fresh data from the U.S. Department of Labor show unemployment largely unchanged in five months. More plainly, people still want and need jobs.
Canadian Valley Technology Center wants to help. The school is hosting an Education and Career Fair May 3.
The come-and-go event is from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., at the El Reno Campus (6505 E. Hwy. 66). The event is targeted to persons aged 16 or older.
Slightly more than 4 percent of Americans (or about 6.7 million) are out of work. An additional 1.6 million persons were marginally attached to the labor force, meaning they want work but have not searched for a job in the past month.
Among those, more than 373,000 people were classified as discouraged, because they believe no jobs are available for them. There is another group that is harder to measure, and that’s the underemployed.
Of the industries adding jobs across the country, construction and manufacturing remained on an upward trend, according to the latest labor data.
Over the past four months, Construction has added 185,000 jobs nationwide, including 61,000 in February. Manufacturing added half as many new jobs last month, but the industry has added a quarter million jobs in the past 12 months in mostly transportation equipment, fabricated products and machinery.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics also recently published an updated list of fastest growing occupations. Many are within industries for which CV Tech educates students.
Wind turbine service technicians was No. 2 on the list, followed by home health aides. Software developers and medical assistants also made the cut. The health industry dominates the list with half of the 20 listed growing professions.
CV Tech’s education and career fair will feature more than two dozen vendor booths throughout the El Reno Campus main building. Vendor early bird registration is March 30. For more information, call CV Tech Employment Specialist Mindi Mitchell at 422-2205.
