Don DeWald of Oklahoma City is the 2017 recipient of the Myra P. Sadker Award, which honors an outstanding instructor of non-traditional students.

DeWald, 60, teaches Computer Information Systems at Canadian Valley Technology Center’s El Reno Campus. Among his recent students was a single mother who had fled an abusive and alcoholic mate. She finished a 10-month program in just four months and was recognized as CV Tech’s top adult student. She went to work at Dell Computers for $18.75 per hour.

DeWald was instrumental in helping the student stay focused and on track, said co-worker Susan Weaver, who nominated him for the award. DeWald has worked at CV Tech since 2004.

He was CV Tech’s Teacher of the Year at the El Reno Campus in 2015. Myra Pollack Sadker, a Washington educator and writer who charted sexual bias in the nation's classrooms, died on Saturday at Georgetown Medical Center. She was 52 and lived in Bethesda, Md.
