CV Tech’s Cowan Campus to Host March 10 Career Expo
YUKON – High school junior Amy Ferguson has been certain for some time that she would pursue a career in the medical profession.
Not content to wait until college to begin preparations, Ferguson attended a Career Expo at Canadian Valley Technology Center last spring and was hooked. She enrolled in Biomedical Sciences at the Dr. Earl Cowan Campus.
Now her career picture has sharpened. Ferguson wants to be either a pediatric oncologist or a developmental pediatrician.
The Career Expo returns to the Cowan Campus from 6:30-8 p.m., March 10 for 7th through 11th grade students interested in engineering, computer programming, 3-D gaming, architecture or drafting and the medical field.
Representatives will be on hand from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and Oklahoma State University College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology. Folks from the state Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration also will be available for students to ask questions.
Redlands, Oklahoma City Community College, Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University also will be represented, in addition to the U.S. Navy. A recent Pre-Engineering graduate was accepted into the naval academy with a goal of pursuing nuclear engineering.
Other recent graduates are attending in-state schools and out-of-state schools such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cal-Berkeley and the University of Missouri-Science and Technology.
Greg Taylor, Cowan Campus director, said some people might not be familiar with all of the choices offered at Canadian Valley.
“CareerTech has evolved to include college-prep curriculum that adequately prepares students for the rigors of college majors such as engineering, research science and doctoral programs,” he said. “They’re getting a jump start. We have graduates who start their freshman year of college in junior-level calculus.
“At the same time, Canadian Valley’s traditional programs such as Computer Programming, Computer Aided Drafting and Design and Health Careers are helping meet the needs of business and industry in the state of Oklahoma.”
The Cowan Campus is located at 1701 S. Czech Hall Road, two miles south of Interstate 40 at SW 15 and Czech Hall Road. For more information, call 345-3333
