CHICKASHA – Loyd Conner points up to a wall in his shop and smiles. Fenders, front panels, a car hood or two.
“That’s my wall of fame,” Conner says proudly.
Star pupils of the past completed each of the projects that adorn the north wall inside the Auto Body Technology classroom at Canadian Valley Technology Center.
Conner used the wall as inspiration for students.
“This is how I want this to look,” he told each student as he imparted years of wisdom. The smart ones perk up, because they are about to learn something.
Master craftsmanship is on display on the wall of fame. All work had been performed by students. Each an example of what an “A” looks like, he said.
Conner spent the past 13 years at CV Tech and another decade prior to that at Southwest Technology Center in Altus imparting skills and wisdom to students in training. He did it for more than just a paycheck, though he was thankful to be paid for what he enjoys so much.
Conner, 65, of Blanchard, walked out of his shop for the final time just before Christmas. He is retiring so he can spend more time with family. He also plans to tinker with his motorcycles and his beloved Mazda Miata coupe.
He admits he will miss the classroom.
“There is nothing that will warm your heart more than paying the knowledge you have forward to help students obtain a career that will last a life time,” Conner said.
He cannot wait to spend more time with his wife of 44 years, Shirley. Conner also has two daughters nearby and three grandchildren.
He said he leaves Canadian Valley with only good memories of the students with which he had the privilege to work and the people of the community who were so helpful and supportive of the school’s mission to prepare people for success in the workplace.
