CV Tech HOSA Students Rake in Statewide Medals

April 23, 2020 - CV Tech Admin

State-mandated limits on gatherings resulted in a cancellation of the planned Future Health Professionals State Leadership Conference.

Nevertheless, the annual statewide HOSA contest was held online. HOSA (formerly Health Occupations Students of America) is a student organization with a mission to empower future health professionals to become leaders in the global health community. This three-pronged effort is achieved through education, collaboration and experience.

Enrollment in health-oriented programs at CV Tech far outnumbers that of any other education field. Full-time health programs include Administrative Medical Office, Biomedical Sciences, Health Careers, Medical Assisting, Practical Nursing and Surgical Technology.

A pair of two-person teams from CV Tech’s Chickasha Campus came away with first- and second-place finishes in the CPR/First Aid contest.

Pamela Roberts, Practical Nursing instructor, said the results were tallied from an online test that was administered to competitors. The live demonstration of skills would have taken place at the leadership conference.

“We had a friendly bit of competition going, and each of them were looking forward to the chance to show their life-saving skills to see who came out on top,” she said. “We’ll never know now, but I did have them ask me if we can let them do a scenario once we get back to class and let the other students ‘judge’ as to which is better.”

Roberts said she is considering doing that when classes resume. There is currently no timetable for re-opening schools following state-manded closures related to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Additionally, HOSA chapters at all CV Tech campuses were recognized for efforts to raise a combined $1,700 for pediatric cancer research. Fundraising events included a water drive, blood drives and sock drives for seniors.
