CV Tech Students Assist in Getting Wind Energy Training off the Ground

Canadian Valley Technology Center students recently helped prepare sections of two wind towers for training purposes in the school’s new Wind Energy Technician program. Among students who helped with the projects are Joseph Dressler, Mustang adult in Welding, Zac Caudle, Yukon adult in Auto Collision Technology, and Bryce Sheehan, Mustang High School senior in Construction Trades.

EL RENO – Getting Canadian Valley Technology Center’s Wind Energy program off the ground has been no small task.

Plans for the program have been in the works for more than a year, according to Business and Industry Services Director Bill Hulsey.

The four-week program’s first group of students reported for class January 11, but that would not have been possible without assistance from several CV Tech full-time programs.

“There are so many components that we needed to have in place within a limited timeline, in order to get classes started on schedule,” Hulsey said. “We were able to have our students work on several projects, which has created a win-win situation for both the school and the students.

“Doing so has also allowed us to stay on track and save some money, but more than that, it has allowed our students some real-world work experience along the way.”

Much of the students’ work has taken place in the creation of “nacelle trainers”. These nacelles, which are placed at the top of the wind towers, normally house generators, and are where technicians climb to work on the towers. CV Tech has built two nacelle trainers for student training use in the wind program.

The creation of the nacelle trainers has taken collaboration and work on the part of several different programs, each doing a specialized piece of the project.

Students in Marc Belew’s Precision Machining program created several components of the nacelles, including the safety rails around the top of the structure, specialized Hytorc simulators and various other precision parts. Painting and refinishing projects for tower sections, nose cone and generator hood were all completed by students in Ryan Copeland’s Auto Collision program.

Toby McEntire’s Welding program built four platforms that will go inside the towers. They also rolled sheet metal, modified two nose cones, cut out the connection ring and welded a coupling skirt for the nacelle trainers. Welding students from CV Tech’s Chickasha campus lent a hand in the project as well, welding a specialized end wall for each nacelle.

Students in Wayne Cotton’s Electrical Trades program completed design and installation of electrical service for the two wind towers, as well as the outdoor classroom and restroom.

They also wired the electrical distribution system for the wind tower training area, and provided aviation obstruction lighting for both towers. In addition, some students in the Electrical Trades program will actually train to climb the towers to run electricity after the towers have been erected.

In the coming weeks, as the weather clears and ground dries, Brian Deason’s Construction Trades class will create the concrete slab and foundation for one of the nacelle trainers, referred to as the “low nacelle”. Training on this nacelle will be one of the first opportunities students will have to work at height.

Many other programs provided support in terms of equipment and manpower. “Our Service Careers class has made sure our towers and blades are always mowed around, and has made sure the ground stays in good shape,” Hulsey said. “We have also been able to use equipment from the Diesel and Construction programs for heavy lifting projects and moving large structures.”

According to Hulsey, it has taken a lot of work and cooperation on the part of not only CV Tech students and staff, but also on the part of the El Reno community. “Over our holiday break, our IT Department kept our networks up and running and our Business Office staff has been more than accommodating to the process of starting a new program.”

“The City of El Reno waived our building permit fees, and Canadian County Commissioners built a road and a parking lot for access to the wind equipment,” Hulsey said. “There have been so many different components that have come together to get us to this point, and we are grateful to everyone who has played a role in getting the program started.”

“Our training facility, when complete, will be a one-of-a-kind facility,” Hulsey said. “We have already gotten our first three classes full, and our fourth is filling up quickly. We feel that having this program here in Canadian County will help create an incentive for wind farms in Oklahoma because we will provide men and women with the training these companies are looking for in new hires.”

OSSM Students Raise ACT Scores and Hopes for Scholarship Money

CHICKASHA – One of the most important, and often times most frustrating parts of being a high school junior or senior is the anxiety of taking the ACT; and reaching one of those “magic numbers” in order to get into a desired college or attain a certain scholarship.
Students in the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM) regional site in Chickasha have been working diligently throughout the semester on AP Calculus and Physics. Through those studies, the students are reaping rewards showing up in improved ACT scores.
According to OSSM Calculus instructor Michell Eike, students enrolled in the program have raised ACT composite scores one and a half points over the semester, and math scores three points.
“We are really excited about the improvements our students have made in their scores,” Eike said. “All of our students are college-bound, and ACT scores are a large factor in university acceptance and scholarship money. We really encourage students to take the test multiple times and get their scores as high as possible.
“In just one semester, we’ve seen great overall improvement in most of our students’ scores. Two of our students raised their composite scores three points each, and one of those students raised his math score five points, to a 34. This is extraordinary progress,” Eike said.
In order to take the rigorous OSSM math and science courses, students must elect to leave their high schools for half of each day. “These courses are definitely challenging, but the higher test scores are an obvious example of what it can do for a student,” Eike said. “The higher scores could potentially result in thousands of dollars in scholarship money for college.”

CV Tech Raising Money for Haiti Victims

Canadian Valley Technology Center announced today it will start collecting funds for disaster relief efforts in Haiti. A 7.0 earthquake hit the southern part of the country late Tuesday, Jan. 12. Officials say more than 100,000 people may have been killed; approximately 45,000 Americans live in Haiti.

The three CV Tech campuses at Chickasha, El Reno and Yukon are participating in the fundraising effort. The campuses are raising the money through its CareerTech student organizations including Ambassadors; Business Professionals of America (BPA); Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA); Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA); National Technical Honor Society (NTHS); and SkillsUSA. Student officers within these organizations at each campus will be collecting money from students, faculty and staff, and community members. All money raised will be donated to Oklahoma-based Feed The Children Haiti Disaster Relief fund. Feed The Children is currently shipping needed items into Haiti.
