Canadian Valley Technology Center

Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics

Canadian Valley Technology Center in Chickasha began serving as Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics’ (OSSM) 13th Regional Center in August 2008. The school accepts students from Alex, Am-Po, Chickasha, Minco, Ninnekah, Rush Springs, Tuttle and Verden. The program is designed for students who are highly motivated in the math and science areas, and show exceptional promise in these subjects. It is designed for students to attend one year, generally as a junior or senior in high school. In addition, students are able to gain college credit in both physics and calculus, upon passing the necessary exams.

Students have the option to attend three hours in the morning, or three hours in the afternoon. Students’ time will be split between 75 min. each of AP Physics and AP Calculus. Students will still attend their sending school, allowing them to continue to be involved in extracurricular activities such as sports, band, academic teams, etc.

In this program, students not only learn a more advanced level of math and science, but they also learn some of the skills and habits that will help them to be successful in college. The program is also set up as a smaller class size so the students have the opportunity to get individual attention from their instructors.

In the fall semester students learn Calculus I and General Physics, and in the spring semester, the move on to Calculus II & Physics. Students will be provided with a TI-89 graphing calculator to use throughout the school year (to be returned in May). Students can take AP exams earning up to two college semesters credit of Calculus and one semester of Physics. These courses are free which will save a student on college expenses. A hands-on Physics lab is also provided which is very well-equipped with great technology resources.

You can also get a chance to improve you ACT score. Our 2008-2009 students improved their ACT composite score by 4.9 points on average, and their math sub-scores increased 5.1 points. One student went from a 22 to a 28, earning scholarship money, and another improved from a 26 to a 31, and earned a full scholarship to any regional school in Oklahoma.
